The 2024 legislative session started on Monday, January 8th and will last 60 days, concluding on March 7. 17 days remain in the session. Our GTH Washington State Team is down in Olympia each day of session, from the moment committees begin, until both chambers adjourn for the evening. This session, legislators are developing supplemental transportation, operating and capital budgets, and considering new policy. This week, legislators are wrapping up their final policy committee meetings before the Opposite Chamber Policy Committee Deadline goes into effect. Policy bills must advance out of committee before 11:59pm on Wednesday, February 21st. Once the deadline occurs, legislators will spend the next five days in fiscal committees. On February 27th, the Legislature will move to floor action for the remainder of session.
Thus far, the Senate has released their proposed supplemental operating and capital budgets, and is expected to release their proposed transportation budget later this week. The House will release their proposed budgets this week as well. Procedurally, each chamber will have a public hearing and vote the budgets out of committee. Negotiations will soon begin between the two chambers to develop a final version of each of the three budgets.
